VHS Journal Files

The VHS can be configured to automatically create daily journal files that contain all of the changes to the history database for the day. If journaling is enabled, the VHS will start a new journal file at the start of every day and begin writing changes as they occur to this file. The previous day’s journal file will be sealed and closed.

One benefit of journal files is that they enable traditional IT backups without disrupting the production service. A closed journal file can be backed up easily since files sizes are typically much smaller than the main VHS database files. Also, all changes for a day are encapsulated in one file, so data that was added during certain time ranges can be recovered easier.

Closed journal files can also be used in the VHS Quick Recovery process to backfill a new VHS database with archived history data. Data changes stored in closed daily journal files may be imported into a new VHS using the VHS Recovery Utility.

Replicated VHS services may also be configured to create journal files.
